President Donald Trump demanded on Monday night that U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar resign from Congress, telling a campaign rally in Corinth, Mississippi, that documents found in a federal investigation showed she had previously used another name and suggesting she married her own brother to commit immigration fraud.
"Therefore, because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume that we must immediately resign her from Congress. Let's get her the hell out," President Donald Trump said at the rally, according to live updates from the Clarion Ledger.
The president told the Mississippi crowd that the investigation had shown Omar previously had another name, "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi." He also repeated a long-circulating suggestion that the congresswoman married her own brother, and claimed she had admitted to fraud — a claim Omar has not made.
"So hear ye, hear ye, please inform the Speaker of the House of Representatives James Michael Johnson that the Dumbocrat party has just conceded the former Ilhan Omar's seat and that Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to fraud and she will no longer be legally allowed to be a member of that august body," President Donald Trump said.
What the investigation has — and has not — established
Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, searched Omar's Washington-area home on October 12 as part of a probe aimed at revoking her immigration status and deporting her, according to USA TODAY reporting. The administration has not announced any charges against her.
Omar has repeatedly called the claim baseless. She has not admitted fraud and has not offered to resign. She has called the allegation that she married her brother "absurd and offensive," and when asked directly whether she had married her brother, she answered, "Not to my knowledge." She has said her legal name is Ilhan Abdullahi Omar and has pointed to contemporaneous records, such as high school materials, reflecting that name.
There is no adjudicated finding that Omar and her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, are siblings, no DNA evidence and no court-verified family record. Fact-checking organizations that have examined the claim for years have said they found no credible evidence establishing the sibling assertion. The shared naming convention is common in Somali families.
Former federal prosecutor Jonathan Fahey has said the two allegations that should concern Omar most are a fake name and being naturalized under a fraudulent date of birth, and that if she used a fake name on loans or passport documents, those are crimes still inside the statute of limitations. Omar denies wrongdoing and has not been charged.
A rally one week before the midterms
The demand came during a rally at Crossroads Arena in Corinth in support of Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, one week before the November 3 midterm elections. President Donald Trump also told the crowd to treat the midterms as if he were on the ballot himself.
"Pretend that I'm on the ballot," President Donald Trump said, urging voters to elect America First candidates on November 3.
The Omar attack was the sharpest moment of a rally in which the president also claimed that Democratic district attorney candidate Scott Colom had slashed sentences for "serial offenders and savage murderers" and released one out of every three criminals in his district "without charges."
