Elon Musk Warns a Democratic Sweep in 2028 Would Turn America Into a Permanent One-Party State

Elon Musk warned on Friday, October 30, 2026, that a clean Democratic sweep of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives in 2028 would turn the United States into a permanent one-party state, in a political intervention that landed days before the November 3 midterm elections.

"My biggest concern is that if there is a clean sweep by Democrats of the House, Senate and Presidency in 2028, they will: 1. Make DC and Puerto Rico states to gain a strong majority in the Senate. 2. Open the borders and legalize everyone living in America illegally to cement a permanent majority. 3. Increase the size of the Supreme Court to gain an immediate majority," Musk wrote on social media. "This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word."

He added that all that is needed to prevent that outcome is "51 Republican senators in 2029."

A warning aimed at the midterms

Musk, who has heavily backed Republican efforts this election cycle, issued the warning at a precarious moment for the administration of United States President Donald Trump. Days before the midterms, Trump's approval rating hovers near historic lows for a midterm cycle, around 32% to 33% in major national polling such as Reuters/Ipsos and ABC News/Washington Post surveys, while Democrats hold an 8- to 11-point lead over Republicans in national congressional preference polls.

The Emerson College poll released on Friday put Trump's approval at 37%, a new low in that pollster's tracking, with Democrats leading Republicans by 10 points on the generic congressional ballot.

What a sweep would mean, in Musk's argument

Musk's three-step argument rests on structural changes that would require unified Democratic control: admitting Washington, DC and Puerto Rico as states would add four Democratic-leaning Senate seats; legalizing immigrants living in the country without authorization would, in his view, lock in a Democratic majority; and expanding the Supreme Court would hand Democrats an immediate majority on the bench.

None of those steps is automatic: statehood and court expansion would need votes in Congress, and any legalization program would face court challenges and political opposition. Musk's post does not claim any of them has happened — it presents them as his forecast of what a unified Democratic government would do.

The post drew immediate attention because Musk remains one of the most influential voices in Republican politics and online debate, and because it frames the 2026 midterms — which will decide control of Congress for the second half of Trump's term — as the first step toward the 2028 contest he is warning about.
