Noah Wyle is PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive for 2026. The 55-year-old star of the hit HBO Max medical drama The Pitt takes the title a year after Jonathan Bailey, becoming the 37th man to earn the honor in the franchise's 41-year history — and the 17th onscreen doctor to do it.
The news was revealed by Amy Poehler on her podcast Good Hang, shortly before Wyle joined her in the studio. Poehler, a self-described superfan of ER, once said of the '90s phenomenon: "You go for Clooney, you stay for Noah Wyle."
"I thought that sounded like a prank"
Wyle needed convincing to accept the title — and his wife, Sara Wyle, was the one who talked him into it.
"I thought that sounded like a prank," the actor tells PEOPLE in his 2026 Sexiest Man Alive cover story. "Just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me."
"She's the reason I accepted because she was very pleased that this reflects well on her taste," he says of Sara. "She thinks I'm a good guy and that the kind of person that I am and the kind of father I am, the kind of husband I am is worth promoting. I thought, 'Okay, if you say so.'"
Poehler joked that Wyle had a long-standing invite to appear on her podcast, but was told he was holding out for one condition: he refused to come on until he was voted Sexiest Man Alive. "I needed something legitimate to talk about!" he replied, laughing.
Three decades in a white coat
Wyle landed his breakout role as Dr. John Carter on NBC's ER in 1994 and played the physician for 15 seasons until the show ended in 2009. Today he leads The Pitt as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, a role that has earned him two consecutive Best Actor Emmy Awards.
Fans love him so much as a doctor that some think he is one in real life. "When people come up and actually think that I can offer real medical advice, I'm always kind of amused by that," he told PEOPLE — adding that someone recently asked him to take a look at her stitches.
His kids' verdict
Noah and Sara met in 2010, married in June 2014, and welcomed daughter Frances, now 11, a year later. Wyle also shares son Owen, 24, and daughter Auden, 21, with his ex-wife Tracy Warbin.
His kids' reactions to the title were, in his words, "markedly profound." His son was practical: "Oh, this is going to make my life so much harder now. But that's cool, Dad. But also, you invite a lot of haters too." His older daughter's response: "No way, no way" — and Wyle predicts she is "going to tease me about this for the next 50 years."
