Tottenham End 36-Year Stamford Bridge Hoodoo With 2-0 Win Over Chelsea — but Maddison Suffers Fresh Injury Blow

Tottenham Hotspur won at Stamford Bridge for only the second time in 36 years on Saturday, beating Chelsea 2-0 in a rain-soaked London derby — but the historic victory came at a cost, as James Maddison was forced off with a fresh injury just 50 minutes into his first start in 18 months.

An own goal by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders in the 77th minute broke the deadlock, after the 21-year-old punched a Mateus Fernandes corner into his own net. Cole Palmer was then sent off for a second yellow card, and Mathys Tel sealed the win with a fine finish in the 87th minute.

It was Tottenham's first clean-sheet win at Chelsea since December 1986, and only their second victory there in 35 Premier League visits — a record of two wins, 11 draws and 22 defeats. Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi, overseeing the win, said afterwards that the result proved his side has a winning mentality after a dismal start to the season.

A cruel blow for Maddison

The afternoon's darkest moment for Tottenham came shortly after half-time. Maddison, who had missed the whole of last season with an ACL injury, was spotted squatting during a lull in play around the 49th minute, surrounded by team-mates, before medical staff rushed on to treat him. He walked off holding back tears and went straight down the tunnel, replaced by Conor Gallagher.

Maddison had only recently spoken about the "dark days" of his nine-month recovery, and had made his first competitive start since May 2025 on Monday. He later came out of the dressing room and returned to the bench to celebrate the win. De Zerbi said the midfielder will have a medical check on Sunday. "We have to manage Maddison like a diamond," he told talkSPORT. "He's a special player, but not just about his qualities, as a personality, as an experienced player."

Palmer sees red as Chelsea unravel

Chelsea's afternoon unravelled quickly after Penders' own goal. Palmer, who had been fortunate to escape an early red card after barging into Fernandes, was dismissed three minutes after the opener for a stamp on Gallagher. Chelsea, already without the absent Joao Pedro, finished the match with ten men. Tel then wrapped up the win in the 87th minute, skipping away from Chelsea's flat-footed defence to drill a low finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Chelsea stay fourth in the Premier League with 13 points, while Spurs climb to 12th with nine points. Chelsea go to Liverpool in the League Cup on Wednesday before hosting Manchester United on Halloween; Tottenham are off until Halloween, when they meet Crystal Palace in north London.

Why it matters

For Tottenham, the win ends one of English football's longest away hoodoos and gives De Zerbi's struggling side a statement result. For Maddison, though, the timing is brutal: a player who fought for nine months to return from a serious knee injury now faces another anxious wait for scan results, with his manager admitting the club must handle him with extreme care.
