Donald Trump Faces 52-44 Democratic Lead as NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll Puts His Approval at 40% Days Before the Midterms

WASHINGTON.- Democrats lead Republicans 52% to 44% among likely voters in the congressional vote, according to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll, two days before the November 3 midterm elections that will decide control of Congress and the final two years of Donald Trump's presidency.

The advantage widens among independent voters, who favor Democratic congressional candidates 52% to 39%, the survey found. And 44% of likely voters said their vote for Congress would be mainly a vote against Trump, against only 21% who said it would be mainly a vote in his favor; 35% said the president was not influencing their choice very much.

Trump's job approval stands at 40% among likely voters, with 59% disapproving, according to the poll, which was conducted October 19-20 among 1,289 registered voters, with a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points for likely voters. The cost of living was the top issue for voters, cited by 34% as their main concern.

Other surveys point in the same direction: a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed October 26 put the Democratic advantage at 53% to 44% with Trump's approval at 32%, while the RealClearPolling average on October 31 showed Democrats at 51.4% against 43.2% for Republicans. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, and all 435 House seats plus one third of the Senate are on the ballot on November 3.

Pollsters caution that a national lead does not decide individual House and Senate races, and that polls have missed Republican strength in past midterms. But with early voting already underway, the numbers leave Trump defending a Republican Congress against a wave of voters motivated above all by opposition to him.
