WASHINGTON.- President Donald Trump used his Election Day appearance on Fox News' Fox & Friends on Tuesday morning to declare that the slogan that built his political movement is becoming obsolete, because, in his words, America has already become great again. "Our country is the greatest country anywhere in the world," Donald Trump said, describing the United States as a "beacon" for the world and arguing that "Make America Great Again" no longer reflects the country's current standing, according to Times Now's live coverage of the interview.
"We have to keep America great," Donald Trump told viewers as Americans voted in midterm elections that will decide control of Congress for the last two years of his term. "They thought we were fools. And we're hot now. We're the hottest country in the world, we're respected by everybody," he said, contrasting the country he inherited — which he called a "laughingstock" — with the country he says he has rebuilt through his immigration crackdown, his war on Iran and his tariff policy. "We were terrible two years ago," he said. "We're great now."
A final pitch built on the border, Iran and tariffs
Donald Trump defended his record in the interview as a closing argument to his base, pointing to the border closure as one of his core 2024 campaign promises kept. "The border was open when I came in… and we got the worst of the worst out," he said, repeating his unverified claim that 25 million people entered under former President Joe Biden. He also warned Iran of possible military action, according to Times Now, keeping the eight-month war at the center of his Election Day message even as he signaled, a day earlier, that a deal with Tehran "could happen."
The president predicted that Republicans would retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, pointing to his 30-day campaign blitz across battleground states in the run-up to Election Day. "I think it's had an impact," he said. That prediction runs against the final polls, which give Democrats a lead of around nine points in the generic ballot and make forecasters favor a Democratic flip of the House, with the first polling stations closing at 6 p.m. Eastern and results in the closest races possibly taking days.
