Denver Broncos Stun Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 With Goal-Line Stand to Take the AFC West Lead

DENVER.- The Denver Broncos scored 15 straight points in the fourth quarter and then stopped the Kansas City Chiefs at the goal line in the final seconds to win 28-24 on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High, taking over first place in the AFC West in Week 8.

Kansas City led 24-13 in the fourth quarter behind three touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes, who finished 30-of-41 for 321 yards. Denver trailed for most of the game and had scored only nine offensive plays in a scoreless third quarter, but quarterback Bo Nix threw two fourth-down touchdown passes, including one in the fourth quarter to Nate Adkins, to start the comeback.

The winning drive came with 1:56 left. Jonah Coleman took a 51-yard catch-and-run from Nix down to the Kansas City 5-yard line and scored on a 5-yard run on the next play, giving Denver a 28-24 lead — the Broncos' first lead since an early 3-0 advantage. Nix finished 20-of-32 for 222 yards, and Coleman totaled 104 yards, with 41 rushing and 63 receiving. Jaylen Waddle also caught a touchdown pass for Denver.

Kansas City drove to the Denver 1-yard line in the final seconds, but the Broncos stopped the Chiefs four times inside the 10-yard line, and defensive tackle Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes to end the game. The Chiefs outgained Denver 399-294, were flagged 11 times for 105 yards and missed a 54-yard field goal.

The win improved Denver to 6-2 and dropped Kansas City to 5-2, its second straight loss after a 20-3 defeat at Seattle the previous week. It also marked Sean Payton's 200th career victory, according to NBC Sports. Denver now controls the AFC West heading into a Week 9 trip to face the Carolina Panthers, while Kansas City hosts the New York Jets next Sunday.
