WASHINGTON.- President Donald Trump said he would love Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens to join the Republicans, praising her endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers in Michigan one day before the midterm elections, as Michigan Democrats moved to distance themselves from Stevens and her party's nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, reported a fundraising surge after she crossed party lines.
Trump's praise came after Stevens, who lost the Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed in August, appeared on Sunday with Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit and endorsed him against El-Sayed. The endorsement, already reported by The Wire Post, has now triggered an open break inside the Michigan Democratic Party: the state party's chairman said Stevens does not represent the wider community, and the party's youth group called on her to resign immediately.
El-Sayed, for his part, has framed the race as a straight choice, telling voters that a vote for Rogers is a vote for Donald Trump. His campaign says fundraising jumped after Stevens crossed party lines, a sign that the controversy is energizing his base rather than weakening it in the final hours before Tuesday's vote.
The Michigan Senate race is one of the most closely watched contests of the midterms: all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are at stake on November 3, and Democrats need a net gain of four seats to take control of the Senate. A record 54 million Americans had already cast early ballots before election day, according to figures reported on the eve of the vote.
