WASHINGTON.- President Donald Trump will deliver his closing message in the midterm elections on Monday afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, capping a final blitz in battleground states, while Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed raised $2.4 million in a single day after his former primary rival, Haley Stevens, endorsed his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, in Michigan.
Trump's closing speech comes one day before voters decide all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats, with a record 54 million Americans having already cast early ballots. The final New York Times/Siena polls released Sunday showed Democratic candidates leading in all seven of the most competitive Senate races, though five remained within the margin of error, including Michigan, where El-Sayed led Rogers 53% to 42%.
El-Sayed's fundraising surge, reported by USA Today on Monday morning, followed Stevens' surprise endorsement of Rogers on Sunday at a Detroit church. Stevens, who lost the Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed in August, has since faced an open break with her own party: the Michigan Democratic chairman said she does not represent the wider community, and the party's youth group called on her to resign immediately. Trump said he would love Stevens to join the Republicans.
In another development on Monday, a federal judge dismissed a Trump administration lawsuit in Alaska's closely watched Senate race, removing a last-minute legal fight from the eve of the vote. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to take control of the Senate, where Republicans now hold a 53-47 majority, and three seats in the House to win that chamber. The first polls close Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, and the last in Alaska at 1 a.m. ET.
