Donald Trump Warns He Will Become 'Mr. Veto' if Democrats Win Congress in Tuesday's Midterms

WASHINGTON.- United States President Donald Trump warned on the eve of the November 3 midterm elections that he will become "Mr. Veto" if Democrats win control of Congress, promising to reject Democratic bills one after another until they come to negotiate. "I guess I'll become Mr Veto. I'm not going to let them ruin it," Donald Trump said in an interview with The New York Post's Miranda Devine for her podcast Pod Force One, excerpts of which aired Sunday on Fox News ahead of its full release on Monday.

Donald Trump laid out the strategy in blunt terms: Democrats would send bills to the White House, he would veto them, and after a month or two of vetoes they would come to the table. "They'll be sending stuff up. You veto it. And eventually, after a month or two of getting all vetoed, they come over, and you make a deal," he said. "If we didn't win, I think we're going to do great, but if we didn't win, I'd veto everything. I'll be vetoing, vetoing."

A rare admission that Republicans could lose

The remarks amount to a rare public acknowledgment by Donald Trump that Republicans could lose their congressional majorities on Tuesday, when all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and governorships in 36 states are on the ballot. A presidential veto can only be overridden by two-thirds of both the House and the Senate, a threshold Democrats are unlikely to reach on party lines alone, which points to legislative gridlock in 2027 if the Democrats take either chamber.

Donald Trump has used the veto only twice so far in his second term, compared with 10 vetoes in his first term. He also told the podcast he would love to run again if he had the opportunity, but acknowledged that the 22nd Amendment bars a president from being elected to more than two terms. Polls heading into Election Day show Democrats near certain to take the House, where they need a net gain of only three seats, and with a real shot at the Senate, where the final New York Times/Siena polls put Democratic candidates ahead in all seven of the most competitive races.

The veto warning came as Donald Trump closed his campaign at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington on Monday, while Democrats held final get-out-the-vote rallies across the battleground states and a record 54 million voters had already cast early ballots.
